Preston Bus Station Up and Over, Cafe Royal Books

Part of the Preston Bus Station series of photo books.

Completed in 1969, now a brutalist icon, threatened with demolition, a successful campaign by conservationists ensured the bus station was awarded Grade II listing in 2013. It was reopened in 2018.

This photo book is published by the small independent publishing house Cafe Royal Books, which was created by photography, fine art and Illustration lecturer, Craig Atkinson. His zines are collected by MoMa, The Tate, the British Library, the Glasgow School of Art, the Martin Parr Foundation and the V&A, to name a few. Craig’s clients include the New York Times, Dazed, Orange, GQ and the Royal Photographic Society.

They are quite simply a brilliant record of architecture, picking up more than simply the bricks, mortar and concrete – they capture the essence of what fascinates about post-war British architecture.
