By Café Royal Books — British Documentary Photography
Features the work of British-born photographer Janette Beckman. Café Royal says,’ Janette began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for music magazines The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands including the Clash, the Specials, Boy George and the Jam as well as three Police album covers. Drawn to the underground hip-hop scene, she moved to NYC in 1983 and photographed pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grand Master Flash, LL Cool J and more.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide and is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of the City of New York, Marseille Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe, and the Tokyo Nakamura Keith Haring Collection. She lives and works in New York for clients including Levi’s and Dior’.
This Limited Edition photo book is published by Cafe Royal Books, an award winning publisher of documentary photography.
Created by Craig Atkinson, a photographer and Fine Art and Illustration lecturer, the photo books are collected by MoMa, The Tate, the British Library, Glasgow School of Art, the Martin Parr Foundation and the V&A to name a few. Craig’s clients include the New York Times, Dazed, Orange, GQ and the Royal Photographic Society.
Craig explains ‘My aim is to create a focussed and complete archive of British documentary photography. I publish roughly 70 titles each year with a small edition ‘archive box’ every 100th title. These archive boxes are aimed at major collections, libraries and museums — helping to increase the visibility of the work and making the books publicly accessible for as long as possible.
