Ukrainian Railroad Ladies is a series of more than 50 portraits published in 2020 by Sasha Maslov, known for his social documentary photography. At the time of publishing, Maslov wanted his subjects to be seen as a symbol of a proud Ukrainian institution, old-fashioned with an idiosyncratic charm. In fact, these are portraits of courage. What we now know is that these are the portraits of women who have kept the Ukrainian railways functioning and have taken tens of thousands of refugees out of the path of Russia’s army, missiles and bombs. The publisher, Osnovy, based in Kyiv and itself continuing to operate is itself symbolic of the freedom to produce books.
Sasha Maslov is a Ukrainian-American portrait photographer and storyteller based in New York City. His work has been exhibited in various photo galleries and art spaces around Europe and the United States. Sasha is a regular contributor to a number of magazines and leading publications in New York and around the globe.
