The Spomenik Database guidebook is Donald Niebyl’s perfect accompaniment to the website he created in 2016. The database continues to evolve and has become a resource which is second to none in mapping ‘modernist World War II monuments built in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from roughly 1960 to 1990’. Known as Spomeniks (the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for monument) today they are found, according to Donald, in ‘present-day regions of Croatia, Slovenia, N. Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Bosnia i Herzegovina and Montenegro’.
The book introduces the reader to 80 memorable examples, each of which has been extensively researched and photographed. Included are maps with GPS coordinates and precise locations.
